Device Solutions Inc today announced the availability of the next generation 4G LTE CAT1 enabled Cellio LoRa Gateway for wide area, long range, end-to-end monitoring of agriculture, cold chain, gas distribution, transportation, and many other industrial (IIoT/M2M) applications. The Cellio solution is a TOTAL solution – encompassing the hardware, software, wireless connectivity, cloud storage, and monitoring apps for smartphones.

As of mid-2018, Verizon has announced it will no longer activate 3G devices on its network and by end of 2019 will cease to support 3G devices (2G technology was sunset in 2016). Industrial customers looking for technology that will be supported for more than a decade will need 4G LTE products like the new Cellio Gateway. Until technologies like 5G are fielded, trialed, and scheduled for scaled deployment sometime after 2020, 4G LTE technology will be the primary technology supported by the major carriers. 4G LTE will be standard for at least the next 10-20 years for fielded applications and installations.

Cellio’s distributed architecture (star topology), with dozens of sensors attached to a Cellio transceiver, connects to the Cellio gateway. The Cellio Gateway makes the connection to the cloud through the cellular network. A single Cellio Gateway can support hundreds of transceivers on a campus, facility, etc. Leveraging a single cellular connection per site represents substantial cellular savings and overall lower Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) for enterprise-wide installations. For example:

Connecting multiple sensors to each transceiver, and possibly 100’s of transceivers to each Gateway, means that each sensor could be monitored for less than $1USD/mo inclusive of cellular fees, data hosting, dashboarding, analytics, mobile apps, etc. In contrast, alternative architecture approaches require a cellular connection for every asset (or every sensor) and can range upwards of $35/month – making many alternative approaches cost prohibitive for most clients.

In addition, Cellio Gateways are scalable and simple to deploy. Once deployed at a site, Cellio provides a platform onto which additional transceiver devices and sensors can be added very quickly, easily, and inexpensively. Cellio’s gateways provide a unique capability whereby the transceivers can simply be turned on and put into place and then automatically connect and start sending information to the Gateway which in turn relays the information to the Cloud. In practice, installations can be done in minutes with data showing up on the cloud dashboard almost instantly.

Overview

Overview

“So now I can see the level of feed left in the bins around the farm, what’s the big deal?” The answer would likely depend on the size of the farm, if the farm is part of a network of farms, how fast the bins could be replenished, the rate at which the feed was being consumed, and the value assigned to the animals being fed by the bins around the farm (just to name a few factors). Begin at the Very Beginning

In the ecosystem that is an IIoT implemented end-to-end system, the most important part is good data being collected in the field. There are many choices of sensors that can be used to collect data – typically the more accurate and more industrially designed devices are the more expensive choices. Thus, it is important to strike a balance between what is a “must have” versus a “nice to have”. For example, a sensor that could provide a level measurement down to the millimeter might be nice (and likely in the $1,000’s), while knowing every foot or two of the level is what is actually useful and actionable (and likely in the $100’s). In combination with the sensor selection, whether the sensor requires a powerline to be pulled to it or not will also impact the cost and should be included the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) calculation.   The data needs to be collected from the sensors by a device (Transceiver) that can then transmit that data a great distance (say up to a mile) to a central location (Gateway) where it can be packaged up before sending to the internet (some say cloud). From Earth to Cloud (Internet)

Once the data from the sensors is collected, it is then ready to be sent to through the network to the “cloud” (another name for the internet) where it can be stored with the data from all the other sensors.   In the case of Cellio, the devices that collect the data from the remote sensors is called a Gateway. The Gateway can communicate over cellular (CDMA/Verizon and GSM) as well as over Wi-Fi (which could connect to a landline, ADSL, Cable, Satellite, etc.).   From there, whether over a VPN or the public networks, the data can be sent to a cloud storage location. IIoT Insights – Simple

The very simplest insights that an IIoT system can provide are those that report a change in “normal status”. These can be immediate triggers that provide alerts about something failing, something going beyond a set limit, or something returning to a known good state. No matter the application, the information is a “snapshot” view of the state at a moment in time. The upside to this kind of information is that it is immediate, and it is reporting a real thing in the real world that needs to be addressed NOW. However, if the item being monitored is critical to the operation of the facility, it would be more useful if the information could be used to warn of an impending failure so that the failure can be avoided altogether.

IIoT Insights – Complex

The more complex insights that an IIoT system can generate are those that consider more than a single data point comparison – usually including some advanced calculations or analytics. In these cases, a trigger or alarm can also be generated, but the condition can alert the appropriate users to conditions that may be leading to a failure. For example, for some refrigeration units, the parameters (current draw, cycle times, etc.) of a good working unit is known. Thus, if the refrigerator is drawing more current or cycling more frequently than it should, this information can be used to alert the users that there is an issue with the refrigerator that needs attending to so that the refrigerator does not fail catastrophically.

In both simple and complex scenarios, all the data collected and transmitted to the back-end can be visualized in any number of ways. For many users, a real world mapping of the items with various color codes and labels is sufficient for their needs. Others need very high level summary table views, while still others need detail views of all the variables. Because the information from the remote devices is centralized in the back-end, all this information can be graphed, mapped, calculated, coded, and displayed however the users like to match their specific needs. They say a picture is a worth a thousand words – a visualization of data may be worth much more than that!

Of course, once the users have the insights, most times they will want to do something about the situation. We find that many of our customers have a number of business pressures to move from a manual process of data collection to a more automated approach. Overview

For some users, having a simple notification or alert when a certain condition exists, is all the remote monitoring they want. For example, there are compliance requirements in many industries where if something is too full, too empty, too high, too low, an item has gone active, or an item has failed that someone needs to be notified quickly in order to protect people and property. In many of these cases the monitoring of the devices is done manually by workers and volunteers checking the status regularly and in many cases recording and reporting the information via paper logs to clerks or managers who transcribe the logs and record them electronically. Depending on the regularity, consistency, and accuracy of the manual checks, compliance may or may not be achieved. These manual “costs” may be quite high when calculated over a year’s time. If the manual checks are not accurate or consistent, the failure to meet compliance can “cost” many orders of magnitude more than the costs of the manual checking. With remote wireless monitoring, checks can be done as frequently, consistently, and accurately as desired. Most importantly, alerts and notifications can be generated automatically when specific conditions exist such that the situation can be addressed before it becomes non-compliant. Alerts and notifications can be as simple as an SMS or email.

Simple Manual Monitoring that could be Remote Monitoring

Many applications that require manual monitoring today already have electrical equipment and/or sensors in place that can be converted simply and inexpensively to remote monitoring. For example, water levels are measured by sensors that provide a digital reading representing the current water level – this is recorded manually by a worker or volunteer who checks the reading every day (or more frequently when it is raining) and records the level in a log book. The person takes the log book and hands it to a clerk (or calls it in to a clerk, or sends via email, etc.) where the clerk enters it (hopefully accurately) into a spreadsheet or perhaps a corporate data system.   The spreadsheet or corporate system is then used by a manager or director to compile the reports that demonstrate that all of the items are being checked regularly to meet compliance, measurement, and/or other requirements. These types of checks are regularly done for other risks as well – liquid levels that may be too low/high, pressures that are too high/low, temperatures too high/low, timings too long/short, equipment that is on/off, and many others.

Simple Connections to Inputs and Outputs

For most of the items being checked manually there is an electronic means of detecting the range of values that need to be reported and recorded. In some cases, the electronic “sensor” is as simple as a switch (similar to a switch in a toilet tank that turns off the water when the tank is full – we count on these every day!). Similar, but more complex switches may have multiple “positions” that change based on the level of fill. Even more complex switches generate electrical signals that vary within the range of things they are measuring. Many sensors do not directly display the measurements in a human readable form, but instead provide electrical information proportional to the thing being measured. Other sensors have simple indicators (red/green), digital displays, or even more sophisticated interfaces. For sensors that provide digital or analog outputs, connecting them to Cellio is simple and inexpensive. Cellio provides screw terminals where the wires from the sensor(s) can be directly connected into the Cellio Transceiver and the readings collected and transmitted as frequently as desired.

Simple Alerts and Notifications

Based on collected data, whether from other cloud services or from sensor readings, alert and notification (SMS, email, HTTP posting, etc.) conditions can be set to notify any and all personnel who need to receive notifications in whatever means they need to be notified. In the case noted above, assuming that a “high water mark” was detected, Cellio would have reported the reading or sent a triggered report through the network to the back-end where it would have been evaluated against the set criteria and the relevant alerts/notifications/messages would have been sent to designated people, processes, and possibly other data systems to notify them of the measurement and “out of bounds” condition.   If the water level were to rise even higher and another level was measured that indicated an “emergency level”, that measured level would also be sent or would have generated a triggered report that might set off a different set of notifications, to a different set of people, processes, or data systems to deal with the new condition. Similarly, if the water to fall below the high water mark, a new alert might be sent to “call off” the alert condition and return the status to “normal”. All of the conditions, alerts, notifications, and integrations are configurable through Cellio.
