Simple IIoT Temperature Monitoring with Cellio

 

The most basic configuration of the Cellio Transceivers is connecting one temperature sensor to one Transceiver and using this configuration everywhere there is a point that needs to be measured/monitored/reported. Whether the need is to monitor things that are stationary or mobile, the combination of sensor, Transceiver, and Gateway allow you to configure almost any enterprise you want – and provide maximum flexibility if you ever need to reconfigure or relocate the sensors. With the extended distance provided by the 900MHz Transceivers using LoRa (1mile Line of Sight), a single Gateway can many times cover a complete facility, site, or campus.   From an installation perspective, the Gateway can be placed wherever is most convenient (or most central) to the Transceiver(s). The Transceivers can be mounted with industrial tape, screws, rivets, wire, cable ties, magnetic feet, etc. If the Gateway and Transceiver are intended to be kept mobile, they could be placed in a bag or box that could be placed wherever and whenever needed. Because the Transceiver operates on a 9VDC LiIon battery it is inherently and completely wireless (except of the connection to the sensor(s)). When the units are turned on, they are immediately on the same network and will begin transmitting without having to do any special configurations, settings, setup, etc. The data also shows up in the back-end immediately and starts to populate the dashboards and visible from desktop, tablet, smartphone, etc. If you are looking for simple, quick, and highly successful to get your enterprise up and running and monitoring temperatures, it is hard to image a system that is simpler, lower cost, or more powerful.

Overview

Surprisingly, some of the seemingly simplest solutions can deliver the greatest value.  Take, for instance, the case of monitoring the temperature of a refrigerator, freezer, cooler, or other container in which perishable items are stored.  In most cases, the cost of monitoring is much less expensive than the cost of replacing the items in the container.  If you also add the need to log the temperature (for compliance purposes) then a system that is consistently and regularly collecting and recording temperature data is critical.   If the right system is used, then early warnings can be provided so that disaster can be averted.

Using IIoT for Temperature Monitoring

Whether the need is to monitor stationary containers or mobile container (like on the back of a truck), the Cellio system has ideally built to provide a turnkey offering to minimize the time and effort of getting things in place.  As noted in the diagram above, the temperature is not only recorded on a regular basis, but can be reported and displayed as an ongoing dashboard of all containers, graphs of the trending temperatures, monthly reports for compliance reporting, and/or alerts and notifications via text and email based on specified set points.  This affords organizations of all sizes and configurations to scale with their needs as cost effectively as possible.  In those cases where optimizing cooling is a priority, the information over days/months/seasons/years can be analyzed and used for predicting the expected values in comparison to the actual operation(s) of the containers.  In this way, the simple consistent regular collection of data reliably provides the basis for protecting the investments made in the items being kept at temperature – whether hot or cold.

Although many people will say “we have had devices connected in the field for years”, the IIoT/IoT growth predicted by industry analysts wasn’t really about them.  In many ways, these people/companies were visionaries and ahead of their time – and they could  justify the cost of the equipment at the costs of the last decade.  The newest trends are more a result in of the convergence in the reduction of component costs, data communication costs and coverage, and easier access to enterprise systems that are likely to lead to paradigm shifts in whole industries – up and down the supply chain.  Because the investments and expenses have to be justified, there are still hurdles to be overcome, but the hurdles are lower and the extent of the impact is so widespread it is yet to be fully appreciated.

A couple big things stood out in 2016:

An increasing number of companies have explored wireless technology options for IIoT and those that have found their way to LoRa appear to have done some of the most extensive research, testing, and evaluation.  LoRa appears to be leading the pack for distributed devices in industrial settings.

Affordable sensors, that are also robust, are making the ability to detect, monitor, and report on field operations parameters accessible to an increasing number of applications that could not previously justified the expense.  As these solutions fall into the sub $100 range, managers and directors (and field staff) are starting to imagine all the things that would fundamentally change how they get “the job” done.

Scalable flexibility in a plug-n-play end-to-end solution that can use existing resources from an enterprise, or leverage a “one stop shop” installation, are increasingly being demanded by organizations looking to get something in place quickly, inexpensively, and with high reliability (low risk).

Conclusion

With the number of corporations customizing new connected products for 2017, the rate of new enterprise-wide initiatives for remote monitoring, and the growing appreciation for “complete solutions”, expect 2017 to be a period of great acceleration in the IIoT market.

Overview

“What gets measured gets done,” and so it follows that “what gets sensed gets measured!” Whether the devices and equipment used for sensing real world physical values are already in place, or need to be newly installed, Cellio is designed to support most sensors that produce an electrical signal as an output.
